In my early 20s, I spent a few years on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and became enamored with the work of George E. Ohr, the “Mad Potter of Biloxi.” George was a prolific potter in the late 1800s and early 1900s and was known for his eccentric self-promotion. When I decided to do a painting set in a barber shop and was looking for a subject with wild hair, George Ohr immediately came to mind. In this piece I imagine George taking a trip to New Orleans to sell his pottery and stopping off at a French Quarter barber shop just for giggles.
